Norm on High-risk Diseases in Aquaculture Amended

Chile, fis.com, 31 May 2010

The Fisheries Subsecretariat (SUBPESCA) amended a decree on the measures to control mortality in aquaculture centres and on the cleaning, disinfection and transport of farming gear.

The new decree, NÂș 349, modifies the Sanitary Regulation for Aquaculture, and was published 22 May in the Official Newspaper of Chile. In terms of the treatment of mortalities produced in the centres, the new legislation establishes a diversification of the alternatives of their processing, directed at farming areas located on land, in the sea and in fresh water.

In so doing, the processes of incineration and composting are added to the ensilage of the mortalities. The new Decree also establishes that the disposal systems of mortalities must be located independent of other farming centre facilities. As far as the handling of farming gear, SUBPESCA established that they can be incinerated, or transferred to an authorised garbage dump for this purpose.

Finally, SUBPESCA set forth new conditions for the cleaning and disinfection in farming facilities and in their equipment to be able to stock smolts. In addition, time periods are fixed for the annual cleaning and disinfection of the centres located in lakes when performing the total withdrawal of fish.
