More Incentives For Fish Farmers

Brazil - fis.com, 10 May 2010

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry (MPA) is seeking to stimulate a production increase of fish in captivity across the country with three primary targets: to create more jobs, better income and more food for the population. As part of this strategy, the MPA passed resolutions to produce fish in three aquaculture parks in Ilha Solteira, San Pablo state, as published on 30 April in the Diario Oficial de la Union.

Altogether, these aquaculture parks will offer 235 areas of 1,500 square metres of water each. For those interested in developing fish-farming activities in these areas, the MPA will offer programmes of management, training, technical assistance and techniques in commercialisation. The parks São Jose dos Dourados, Corrego da Anta and Corrego do Parobi will be ceded free of charge to aquaculturists for a period of 20 years.

Each aquaculture area will have to generate three direct jobs through family labour. The three aquaculture parks will have a production capacity of 11,300 tonnes of fish per year. The park of São Jose dos Dourados includes 129 areas that will be able to produce up to 6,200 tonnes of fish, and Corrego da Anta, with 81 areas, will have the capacity to harvest 3,900 tonnes.

In Ilha Solteira, the MPA will also offer water areas for the launch of projects by legal entities or business owners. These areas are located in the aquaculture park of Ponte Pensa, in the municipality of Santa Fe do Sul, and will be granted to interested parties once payment is made for their use. The government offers 16 areas of two hectares of water each, which will be able to produce 6,400 tonnes of fish per year.
