Treat Aquaculture on a Par with Agriculture: Kiran

The Hindu, 18 June 2011

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumr Reddy has requested the Union government to treat aquaculture on a par with agriculture and make a formal declaration to that effect to enable aqua farmers to get income tax concessions, insurance coverage, credit support, etc.

Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy made this request when Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Food Processing Industries Arun Yadav called on him at his office in the Secretariat on Friday.

From the State government's side, he said, electricity transmission lines would be extended to the areas of fish production centres and to the places where some government's fisheries schemes were under implementation.

The Union Minister complimented Mr. Reddy for Andhra Pradesh's efforts in giving fillip to shrimp culture. He, however, said there was scope to do much more in the field of aquaculture.
